What is a Distance Selling Pharmacy (DSP)?

A Distance Selling Pharmacy (DSP) is an online-only pharmacy that provides prescription services remotely, typically through mail order or internet-based delivery. DSPs do not have physical walk-in premises for patients and operate differently from traditional brick-and-mortar pharmacies. They can provide Pharmacy First services remotely but are limited to six of the seven clinical pathways (excluding acute otitis media which requires otoscope examination).

How are DSP pharmacies ranked in the leaderboards?

Distance Selling Pharmacies are ranked by several key metrics including items dispensed (pCItems), Pharmacy First services (covering conditions like sore throat, impetigo, infected insect bites, shingles, sinusitis, uncomplicated UTI, minor illness referrals, and urgent medicine supply), NMS (New Medicine Service) consultations, and EPS (Electronic Prescription Service) nominations. Note: CPCS (Community Pharmacist Consultation Service) was incorporated into Pharmacy First in England, so it is not tracked separately. Only pharmacies identified as DSPs using the distance_selling_contractor field in the NHS England contractor database are included in these leaderboards.

Can DSPs provide Pharmacy First services?

Yes, Distance Selling Pharmacies can provide Pharmacy First services, but with some limitations. DSPs cannot provide face-to-face consultations at the pharmacy premises. They are limited to providing six of the seven clinical pathways consultations - the acute otitis media pathway is excluded as it requires otoscope examination of the patient's ear, which cannot be done remotely. DSPs still need to have a consultation room that meets the requirements in the Terms of Service to provide the service.

How often is the DSP leaderboard data updated?

The Distance Selling Pharmacy leaderboard data is updated monthly when new NHS England data becomes available. NHS England releases pharmacy dispensing data typically 2-3 months after the reporting period to ensure accuracy and completeness. This delay is standard across all NHS data platforms.

What does "items dispensed" mean for DSPs?

Items dispensed (pCItems) refers to the number of prescription items that a Distance Selling Pharmacy has dispensed and been paid for by the NHS. This is a key metric for measuring pharmacy activity and performance. For example, a prescription for 24 x 200ml bottles of Fortisip mixed flavours counts as 1 item. DSPs typically handle high volumes of prescriptions due to their online delivery model.

What are EPS nominations and why are they important for DSPs?

EPS (Electronic Prescription Service) nominations represent patients who have chosen a specific pharmacy as their preferred dispenser for electronic prescriptions. For Distance Selling Pharmacies, EPS nominations are crucial as they represent committed patient relationships and predictable revenue streams. Higher EPS nominations typically indicate better patient retention and satisfaction. The EPS nominations leaderboards show which DSPs have the most nominations, which are gaining the most nominations week-over-week, and which are losing nominations.
