About the Leaderboards

Data Sources

All leaderboard data is sourced directly from official NHS datasets:

  • England: NHS England Contractor Dispensing data, updated monthly
  • Scotland: NHS Scotland Contractor Activity data, updated monthly

Data is typically published 2-3 months after the reporting period, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

Metrics Explained

Items Dispensed

Total number of prescription items dispensed by the pharmacy in the reporting period. This includes all prescription items processed through the NHS.

Pharmacy First Services

A service allowing pharmacies to provide consultations and treatments for minor illnesses without requiring a GP appointment. Includes conditions like sore throat, impetigo, UTI, shingles, and more.

NMS (New Medicine Service)

A consultation service provided by pharmacies to help patients understand and manage new medications, improving adherence and outcomes.

MCR (Medicines Care and Review)

A service in Scotland providing structured medication reviews to help patients manage their medicines effectively and identify any issues.

EPS Nominations

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) allows patients to nominate a pharmacy where their prescriptions will be sent electronically. When a patient nominates a pharmacy, all their prescriptions from any GP practice are automatically sent to that pharmacy, making it more convenient for patients and reducing paper prescriptions.

Data Updates

Leaderboards are updated automatically when new NHS data becomes available. The most recent reporting period is displayed at the top of each leaderboard page.

Historical data is preserved, allowing you to track performance trends over time. Use the individual pharmacy and GP practice pages to view detailed historical data and trends.
